Tips for a Great Headshot from a Connecticut Photographer

There is a wide range of options for what your Connecticut headshot could look like, but everyone would agree that the goal is one thing: to look trustworthy. Research from Princeton suggests that within the blink of an eye, humans start making judgements about someone’s face. Now, I hope that in 2022 we are taking more than half a second to get to know someone, but the science is the science. So…what can you do to make sure that the instant someone sees your image, they feel that they can trust you? When applying for a job, sharing about yourself on LinkedIn, or even on your corporate badge, you want people to see your face and be at ease! Here are 3 tips to consider when getting a headshot!

1. Know your audience.

Picking the right location or the right backdrop is suuuper important for getting the right message across. If you’re in the corporate world, there might be restrictions on what your headshot has to look like, but if its up to you, work with your photographer to pick the right spot to shoot. For example, f you’re applying for a position with the US Forest Service, ya might want a tree or two in there! Now maybe that is obvious, but the point remains: Make sure your surroundings match the vibe you are trying to convey. Check out the three examples below.

First, Hollis works in real estate and wanted his headshot to help him look capable and confident. The darker background and suit, combined with his big smile and kind eyes, help his clients see he is going to meet their every need.

2. Share your concerns with your photographer.

Unfortunately, we are our own harshest critics. We all have things about ourselves that we struggle to love and they attract the most attention from our own eyes when we see our picture. So share your concerns! Do you have a “good” side? Got a pimple that decided TODAY was the day to make an appearance? Don’t fret! There are loads of posing tips and tricks to have you look as flattering as you’ve ever seen yourself.

3. Get comfortable!

How are you going to look your best when you don’t feel comfortable? Sure its a big deal, but you are not getting over that finish line by hard work here. So take it easy! Have a normal day before your session. Put on clothes that make you feel confident. Eat a meal that hits all the right spots, and enjoy your favorite beverage with it.
